OB-X1 — A 3D-Printable Modular Humanoid

OB-X1 is our attempt to create a full-size, 3D-printable humanoid robot platform that ordinary makers can actually build. The goal is to design the structural frame, joints and interfaces around parts that are easy to source: standard bearings, threaded rod, nuts, bolts, inserts, shafts, wiring and eventually off-the-shelf servos or actuators.
The clever bit isn’t making it look futuristic. Plenty of renders can do that. The challenge is making every section printable, modular, serviceable and dimensionally compatible with the next one. Torso to shoulder. Shoulder to arm. Hip to thigh. Knee to shin. Ankle to foot. No magic geometry and no parts that only work in a picture.
The structural components will stay deliberately simple and strong, while the skull, torso, arms and legs can use removable cosmetic shells to give OB-X1 its humanoid proportions without compromising the engineering underneath.
The longer-term idea is an open humanoid platform that can evolve with different actuators, electronics, sensors, hands, heads and control systems without having to redesign the whole robot every time.
We’re starting with the passive mechanical skeleton, proving the joints and interfaces, printing it, assembling it, breaking whatever deserves to be broken… and improving it from there.
Because apparently building a full-size 3D-printed Porsche wasn’t enough trouble. 😏
OB-X1 — Design. Print. Assemble. Test. Improve.
